One system for a 75-year-old Hull manufacturer, from enquiry to dispatch
J&CR Wood make point-of-sale displays and sub-contract engineering in Hull. We built the platform that replaces their CRM, estimating spreadsheet, Trello boards and paper job sheets: one Laravel system for sales, estimating, planning, purchasing, stock, the shop floor, quality and dispatch.
The problem
The business ran on a patchwork. Customers lived in a CRM, quotes came out of a 19-sheet Excel estimator, planning sat on two Trello boards, and the shop floor ran on paper. Every job crossed four systems before it reached a van, and each hand-off was a chance to lose a detail.
Sage 50 was staying as the accounts system, so whatever replaced the rest had to work alongside it, not around it.
What we did
We built one Laravel application, split into modules that follow a job through the building: CRM, enquiries, estimating, sales, planning, purchasing, stock, shop floor, quality, dispatch, job closure and reporting. Modules talk to each other through events, so a quote accepted in sales becomes a job in planning without anyone re-typing it.
Every sheet of the old estimating spreadsheet now has a page in the platform. Operators on the shop floor use tablets: they log in with a QR code, run timers on more than one job and hand over piece counts at the end of a shift, and it keeps working offline if the Wi-Fi drops. Supervisors get a live production board, non-conformance tracking and KPIs. Quotes and closure packs come out as PDFs, and Sage sits behind a single gateway that can run by hand now and connect directly later.
The build ran from April to July 2026, led by our technical lead, with automated tests and static analysis on every change.
What changed
Modules 0 to 12 are built, including the full estimator and the shop-floor app. The two steps left are the direct Sage connection, which is waiting on a licence, and moving the historical data across for cutover.
